Just came across the website thanks to a friendly member of the hotel staff. Did you know that the second earl gave the river Caledon in Lesotho its name, and that the US soldier who shot Crazy Horse came from Caledon

Hey Caledonians!
Wow, a beautiful little village you have there! I'm interested in all Irish history, have been inspired to find out a little about your village after it made the news network here in the States!

Hi, my Great Grandfather, George Mcgregor, moved from Ayrshire Scotland sometime after 1902 to work on the Caledon Estate as a Land Stewart. He had previously worked for the Argyl family in Loudan. He brought at least 4 of his children with him, Robert, Jeanie,Maggie(May)and Agnes. May is supposed to have run off with the gardener from the estate and eventually turned up in South Africa! If anyone can remember any of the Mcgregors I would be delighted to hear from them.

I first visited Caledon in 1970 when I was serving in the British army based in Armagh. I was attached to the 2nd Bn UDR and many of the villagers served in the unit, (in fact I enlisted many of them). The people were very friendly and generous and I always enjoyed my visits there. One of the officers in the batalion was the 6th Earl of Caledon. He was a very amiable and friendly man and was very helpful and generous to the soldiers of whichever regular army unit was serving in the area. I am glad that the province is now a more stable and peaceful place - it was a bit hot during my two years there.

I'm researching my family's ancestry, and I'm a first generation Irish-American. My father was born in Caledon on Mill street, his name was James Alexander Mehaffey born May 2, 1926. My father's brothers and sisters were all born in Caledon on Mill street. They are, Harry Mehaffey born July 26, 1916, Robert Mehaffey born November 14, 1928, and the sisters were, Marie Mehaffey born May 30, 1918, Louise Mehaffey born January 1, 1920, May Mehaffey born May 4, 1924, Elizabeth Mehaffey born September 23, 1930. Their parents were Henry and Matilda Jane Mehaffey. My grandfather worked at the Woollen Mills until 1931 when the family left Caledon and moved to Belfast. If anyone has any information on the Mehaffey's please contact me.

Thank you,
Colin Mehaffey

This message is for CATHERINE MULVEY. I read your post below (10 Dec 2007) with interest and have attempted to reply to you privately. However, I seem to be having trouble reaching your email, so just want to let you know that your great-grandmother, Mary Anne Murphy (Mrs John Potter), was my great-grandmother's older sister! Would love to swap info. Best wishes.

First let me say what an excellent web site, I learned more about Caledon from here than from the rest of the web.

My interest is that I am searching for ancesters. In the 1861 census from Sunderland it list Peter Carney and his birthplace can be read as Caledon. Peter was born circa 1830-33 and his father was Matthew.

Can anyone please tell me where I may find any information on this family or if there is anyone else reseaching the same family I would be delighted to hear from you.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks once again for the web site.

Brian Curtis
