further to what I posted i showed the photos to my nan and she could recollect the mercers shops and pointed out her mums house in main street. she commented on the war memorial and remembered the soldiers stationed at caledon (where she met my grandad in the late 30's) and how they used to be chased by deer on the Alexander estate who she also remembered. She showed me a clipping from the Armagh Guardian reporting of the tragic death of her nephew, trevor McIlveen who drowned near the mill in Calendon in 1967 who was the son of her brother James (jimmy) McIlveen who had the butchers on Main street caledon. One of my dads earliest memories was going to school and on the way he and his sister stopping off at Uncle Jimmys to get a slice of ham off the bone and a bottle of milk and eating it on the way. My nan seems to think the teacher was called mrs Knox

My nans family (mcelveen) and dad were all born in Caledon and it is absolutely wonderful to see photos of the village.I have been trying to research this branch of the tree but have hit a brick wall as there is such a variation of spellings (mcelveen, mcilveen and mcilwain)
I have heard so many wonderful stories from my family when they were growing up. My nan has loads of photos and newspaper clippings of calendon and I will have to raid her cupboards and post some on here! She has one newspaper article advertising her brothers butchers shop in caledon- James mcilveen master butcher with 21 years experience and there's a picture of him smiling behind the counter. If any villagers have any recollection of mcelveens in the village please feel free to contact

Hi Jason;
We,my Uncle and myself, have been researching our family and it lead us back to the Alexanders of the House of Menstrie. We have been to visit my closest relatives on Black Park farm near Omagh. When there we visited the estate at Caledon and I have spoke with Dennis and Lady Caledon and got some of the family history. It is a beautiful area and you have a site I will tell my Uncle about. We are cousins to this line of Alexanders but beleive our connection is not talked about. Obviously our ancestor was not first born but it is great to read the history. Thanks and if you hear of any sons of second or third marriages that ended up in the Omagh area let me know. Also visited John at Mliford House, a very interesting gentleman and beautiful estate and grounds. I knew of the old Dublin mills but did not know there was still property there. Jim Alexander

Hello Caledon

I too have great memories of my stay in your beautiful part of the world with my great-uncle
Eddie Casey (RIP).

I am very interested in hearing from anyone who knows some of my families history.

My great-grandparents were married in the Caledon Catholic Church:
James KELLY & Bridget MCKENNA 2/2/1886

& also most likely
Bernard CASEY & Rosetta MCQUADE 18/6/1900.

If you remember anything about these families
or their siblings or parents
it would be great to hear from you.

God bless
Theresa

PS thanks for the site

My ancestor settled in Caledon Township, Peel County Ontario Canada (then Upper Canada) in the 1840's. It was then named Charleston but later re-named Caledon which I believe was due to the large influx of Irish immigrants, mostly from Norther Ireland. Also, after WW2, the then Governor General of Canada, Gen. Alexander visited here and I recall that he stated that his family came from Caledon Ireland.Having found this site I am very pleased to learn more about Caledon and the Alexander family

Hi, I am researching family history and found that my greatgrandfather William Lewin was born in Caledon in 1848. I think this is before registration but I dont know how to find parish records for the area. Any help or advice would be appreciated. He joined British army later in life so maybe his father was stationed there.I would love to find out William's parents names. Thankyou.

Hi again,

Should have said my great great grandparents were John Casey and Ellen Magee from Caledon. They married in 1847. Their son Francis was my great grandfather. He married a Margaret Toal. Are there families of these names still in the village?

I tried to send you a private e-mail, but it didn't get delivered to you, for some reason.

My name is Shelly Sargent, and I live in the Town of Caledon, Ontario, Canada. Caledon is a collection of small villages that have been grouped together to form a town.

We are about 1 hour north of Toronto. Many of the villages within Caledon have been named after villages or well known families in the UK, and in fact I have recently been working on a "twinning" project with a nearby village (Palgrave, ON) and the village of Palgrave, Suffolk, England.

It occured to me that it would be lovely to do the same with the actual Town of Caledon, Ontario and our Namesake in the UK.

Would you (or any of your visitors) have any interest in working with me on such a project or could you pass my information along to anyone with similar interests? I look forward to hearing back from you soon.
